Do students need an account to watch a lecture or recording?

It depends how you share it. Publish a recording and it gets a public link that anyone opens in their browser with no sign-up, no app, no login. If you want students to search the library themselves rather than open links one at a time, add them to your organization as members. Every team plan includes unlimited members, so a cohort of thirty or three hundred costs the same.

Can students search across all the lectures, or just watch them?

Search across all of them. Every recording saved to the cloud is transcribed and indexed, so a student can search your library by what was said, by title, by tag, or by who recorded it. They type a concept, and we surface the recordings where it came up and jump them to the moment. That works from ⌘K anywhere in the app.

Can we tag recordings by course or week?

Yes. Tags are searchable across the whole library. Tag by course code, module, week, or topic, and a student searching that tag pulls up everything filed under it. It is the difference between a folder of videos and a library students actually use.

Can students record and publish things themselves?

They can record. They cannot publish. A student can record a walkthrough or a presentation, save it to the library, and tag it, but pushing anything to a public link is reserved for owners and admins. They can also delete a recording they made themselves, and only that one. Nobody else's work is theirs to remove.

What if a recording should only go to certain students?

Mark it private. A private recording is visible to you and nobody else until you add people, and you choose exactly who. It stays out of everyone else's library and out of their search. If the person who needs it is not in your organization at all, an external examiner or a guest lecturer, you can hand them a magic link that opens without an account, and revoke it whenever you like.

Do I need to install anything to record a lecture?

No. The recorder runs in your browser, the same on Mac, Windows, and Linux. Record a browser tab, any application window, or your whole screen, so slides, a code editor, or a piece of lab software all record the same way. Your microphone captures your commentary alongside it.
