Welcome to Pixelmatic

A bit of backstory

For a few years, we used a screen recorder called Capture, made by Dropbox. It was simple, it lived in the browser, and it did the one thing we needed it to do.

Then Dropbox shut it down.

We went looking for a replacement and couldn't quite find one that fit. The closest options were either too heavy (downloads, installs, sign-ups before you could record a 30-second clip) or too thin (no team settings, no shared library, no clean way to share a video with a customer). So, after a bit of deliberation, we decided to build our own. That's where Pixelmatic comes from.

What we wanted it to do

A handful of things, really. None of them revolutionary. We just wanted them all in one place:

  • No downloads. Open the browser, hit record, you're going.
  • Shared team settings. Camera position, frame backgrounds, branding... configured once, synced in realtime, consistent across everyone.
  • One place for our videos. An org-wide library so the team isn't hunting through Slack DMs for the walkthrough from three weeks ago.
  • Easy sharing. A clean public page on Pixelmatic plus an embeddable player, so customers don't need an account to watch.

What's free, what isn't

The recorder itself is free. Sign up for a free account, then record as many videos as you like and store them locally. You only need a subscription when you want the team features: shared settings, the org-wide library, and sharing videos through Pixelmatic.

That's version 1. There's plenty more we want to do, but it felt better to ship something honest and useful than to keep polishing in the dark.

If you give it a try and something feels off, we'd love to hear it.

Until next time!
